Ok. I’m tired of the typical vampire, werewolf and fairy.I’m also tired of the occidental-centrism in mythology. Hence, this list.

I tried to included as many cultural variants as I could find and think of. (Unfortunately, I was restricted by language. Some Russian creatures looked very interesting but I don’t speak Russian…) Please, add creatures from your culture when reblogguing (if not already present). It took me a while to gather all those sites but I know it could be more expansive. I intend on periodically editing this list.

Of note: I did not include specific legendary creatures (Merlin, Pegasus, ect), gods/goddesses/deities and heroes.

SO WAIT, YOU RE-LINE THE ENTIRE HD SPRITES??! YOU BUILD FROM THE GROUND UP?? woah that's some commitment and effort there!!!

Yes indeed! It produces the best look and gives me an easy way to recolour/edit them later.

For people who are interested in my process, I’m going to run it down just for the fun of it. It’s not really a tutorial, just a step by step, “here’s how trashbag does it.”

The first thing I do is outline the whole sprite. I use vector lines, as I always do with my sprite edits and tutorials. The whole outline looks like this:

image

Then I do the same with the eyes; I outline the eyelashes. I can colour in the eyes after during base colours.

image

Just to make things easier on myself, I then get all the shadows down with vectors. You can easily do this without, just using a pen tool, as well as do it when you are colouring the whole thing… But I just like to get all the shadows on the canvas right away so I can just copy and paste things later.

image

With that, I’m free to do the base colours. The hair I always make gray so that I can easily recolour it another time if I want to.

image

With the base colours done, I use these, “rules,” that I made way back when. THE DIFFERENCE HOWEVER FROM FOUR MONTHS AGO TO NOW is that the water colour texture is no longer a multiple layer for me, and instead is now an overlay layer.

image

And that’s basically it. The recolours have just been me changing up the base colours. It can be absolutely anything.

Sprite edit tutorial/tips: Genderbends

exaltedgrimleal:

An introduction: I use Paint Tool SAI. If you do not use Paint Tool SAI,  your method of editing sprites may be different, but the idea is the same. If you have any questions(on the method or Paint Tool SAI), feel free to inbox/message me, but not on anonymous; that way, I can help you personally.

I am no means an expert, nor am I a good teacher, but hopefully this will help.

The main thing about genderbends is that I can give you tips, but the end result depends on the person editing the sprites; a reversed gender can mean a lot of things; different hair styles, body types, clothing, etc.

I have a request for a tutorail if you can do one that is,uhmm Could you teach use how to make custom bodies/poses??

Of course.

Custom bodies and poses can be done in two ways; by making your own resources completely or pulling from others to have different arms and poses depending on what you choose.

What that means is draw out your own pose, whether by scratch or using a pose already made, completely covering it:

image

Don’t ask why they all have capes; it ended up being coincidental and dumb.

Or taking various parts to make one(hint: the arm) while keeping the rest:

May I ask if you could to talk about how to do cell shading? I honestly don't know how to do with it
Asked by Anonymous

I think the first thing to learn is what cell shading is.

Don’t mind me as I use my older male Kana as an example; that’s what I was working on when I received this ask. Also don’t mind the layer names; when I haven’t finalized things, I don’t name things seriously.

Take a look at the top of the hair. See that shading?

image

This type of shading is called, “cell shading.” Or at least that’s what artists I’ve seen call it; I dropped out grade ten art due to my teacher because it was not mandatory in my program no it was because of my teacher

The shading below here, now, is called, “soft shading.”

hey!! i'm getting into editing sprites and all, but i have a question! how do you....well, change the color of sprites? such as their skin? or their hair? ; v ;

There are three ways to recolour things. All three ways sometimes require a bit of fixing, but let’s look at the two ways.

The first is to change the hue and the other is to make an overlay layer over something that is gray. The third is to use a multiply layer, but I usually do not recommend this.

For this demonstration, I’m going to be using my unit, Haruki. We’re going to ignore the error in his sprite where some of the gold parts are blue because I only noticed that while making this tutorial and I didn’t want to recapture the snapshots I had beforehand. See, even I make mistakes.

Disclaimer, this got a lot longer than I intended it to be.
